The Marvin and Juanita Smith Learning Centers of Excellence (MJSLCE^sm) was established in 2004 as a 501(c)(3) Non-profit Corporation under the Texas Non-profit Corporation Act for charitable and educational purposes.  Our primary focus is to reduce promiscuity, pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections among teen girls and boys.  Since 2008 we have been educating Houston Area teens to accomplish our goals.

By adopting an alternative educational model, MJSLCE^sm works to reduce teen pregnancy and the contraction of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).  In addition to encouraging abstinence until marriage, MJSLCE^sm instructs teens in healthy and correct birth control methods.  MJSLCE^sm conveys the facts, myths and possible risk factors regarding birth control methods.  However, if post-abortion counseling is needed by a student, it will be made available by their school’s trained nurses, psychiatric or social workers personnel.

Realityworks® RealCare

We have developed a comprehensive Instructor’s Manual and Student Workbook that align with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) health standards, Section 115.32. In conjunction with our curriculum, we use the Realityworks® RealCare computerized babies in both our teen pregnancy prevention  and the teen parenting support programs (Three Ps^sm.  The computerized babies are life-size infant simulators that cry and must have their needs for feeding, burping, diapering, and rocking deciphered and met by their assigned teen parent.   A teen is responsible for the full care of their baby for one full weekend.  The RealCare babies are also used to teach pregnant and parenting teens healthy and effective parenting skills.  In both educational models the teens are faced with the enormous responsibilities of parenting.

 It is our desire to motivate these teens to graduate from high school and obtain a secondary degree or training from a college, university, or technical school.  It is our aim to encourage self-confidence and aide these teens to become positive and productive citizens.
